Projects in Europe
Workshops

The Ray of Light Foundation offers workshops throughout the Netherlands, and in other European countries. The theatrical workshop with Djembe music is based on the book LONG ROAD or in Dutch DE LANGE WEG by Bruce Cerew.

The objective of the project is to create more awareness about Dutch asylum policy, children in conflicts, migration and integration amongst students between 12 and 18 years old.

In these workshops, Cerew tells stories of humankind’s inhumanity to humankind. The author and founder of the Foundation draws on the terrible history of the many civil unrests and wars in Africa; especially from his devastating and near death experience as a war affected child in Liberia and Sierra Leone – where millions of Africans suffered unimaginable odds to escape tyranny, killings and bloodshed.

Also, normally in these workshops, Cerew explains his Dutch side of the bloody experience that started in Liberia and Sierra Leone: Ultimately, he finds safe refuge in the Netherlands; only to discover other setbacks: the cruelty of the treatment Europeans give refugees. This shocking discovery nearly crushes his stamina to exist in his 'new and safe world' where physical war, as in Africa, is nearly outpaced by racism, scorn, hatred and harsh asylum policies in the 'civilized' world of Europe.

This project is an open door to humane dialogue. Creative ideas from students on current issues are like fresh, healing breeze blowing through The Netherlands and Europe. These workshops with students positively make us all reflect on ways of changing our established mindsets; and truly becoming one another’s keeper in this trying world.
